Answers to questions regarding opium consumption.
1. I believe that opium is consumed by a proportion of adult males (Chinese) but not by a majority of them. I do not believe that children or women consume it to any great extent.
2. Large consumers present an emaciated appearance. I cannot speak to other effects.
3. I believe that the majority of Hong Kong Chinese consume opium without injuring their efficiency.
4. I do not know of any general increase or decrease in the consumption of alcohol among Chinese.
5. I think that the Chinese generally regard opium in much the same way as Europeans generally regard alcohol - as a luxury when used in moderation.
